ALI BALIGHI is an experimental composer. His works are mostly based on traditional Iranian folk music, with a tendency of also exploring microtonality and new instrumental perspectives. His compositional background also includes a wide variety of symphonic, chamber, and solo instrumental works; music for theatre productions; and theme music for film and television.
In the summer of 2017, Ali won the composition competition in The Iranian-Canadian Composers of Toronto and the Canadian Music Centre for his Daramad for solo accordion. In the fall of 2017, he won second place in the composition competition of Radio Javan (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) for a little piece for orchestra symphonic. His works have additionally performed at contemporary music festivals in Iran, Portugal, Finland, and Canada. |
Ali received his Bachelors of Music in cello performance from the Tehran University of Art, where he graduated with highest honors. His teachers and mentors include Hamidreza Dibazar (Dean of Faculty of Music at the Tehran University of Art), Sharif Lotfi (the university's former Dean), Mostafa Poortorab, Karim Ghorbani (a well-known Iranian cellist), Majid Esmaeeli, Ildin Ahmadinejad, Keyan Emami, and Maziar Heydari. His initial compositional studies began with Kiawash Saheb Nasagh and Mohammadreza Azin, and he has also participated in masterclasses with Ahmad Pejman.
Ali has also worked as a University Instructor of Music at the Elmi-Karbodi of Alborz, Azad University, Tehran Conservatory of Music where he has taught a wide variety of courses including cello performance, music theory, sight singing, ear training, musical form, and a beginner course in music composition.
