Described as ‘strikingly contemporary’ (Limelight), ROBERT McINTYRE (he/him) is an emerging Australian composer who draws from personal experiences, nature and important causes as potential frameworks, in order to create an atmosphere of discussion and reflection. So far, he has been commissioned by and/or collaborated with Divisi Chamber Singers and Sally Whitwell (Inaugural Compose Queer Initiative), Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), Trio Immersio (EU), VYSO, Melbourne Saxophone, Syzygy Ensemble, oboist Jasper Ly, Collide Trio, Arcady Ensemble (CAN), the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and more.

Recently in 2022, Robert won the first KC No Divide Art Song Competition (US, Kansas City), with his work “A Sea Spray of Ash” selected as one of four winning works internationally. Robert also has a number of performances lined up, including features in Midsumma Festival’s “Homophonic!” series in February, upcoming Tempo Rubato series “Tempo Queer” in June, and more. He has also been commissioned by Wattle Fellow Helen Shen, alongside three other composers, to create a work centred on global sustainability for an upcoming 2022 concert.

In 2021, Robert was selected for both of Kammerklang’s inaugural call for scores ‘Hidden Curiosities’ programs (Melbourne and Sydney) for the work "A Sea Spray of Ash" centred on climate activism, nationally selected for Australian Youth Orchestra’s (AYO) National Composition Program under the mentorship of Anne Cawrse, and internationally selected for the Vienna/New York based 2021 ICEBERG New Music Institute writing for Trio Immersio. He also received commissions from VYSO, Melbourne Saxophone and the Our Lady of Sion College Wind Band with premieres set for 2022.

He is influenced by classical-contemporary music, post-minimalism, classical-crossover and film/soundtrack music, and is inspired by the likes of Katy Abbott, Stuart Greenbaum, Thomas Newman, John Adams, Caerwen Martin and Joe Hisaishi to name a few. Robert currently holds a BH-MUS(Hon) in Music Composition from the University of Melbourne (MCM), having learnt under Stuart Greenbaum in his honours and under Katy Abbott, Elliott Gyger, Miriama Young, Caerwen Martin and Melody Eötvös across his studies. Robert is also published in ‘Take Note: Interviews with Australian Composers’ edited by musicologist Madeline Roycroft, for his co-interview, alongside Laura Abraham, of Professor Stuart Greenbaum. He has interned with Syzygy Ensemble and currently working with composer Katy Abbott in digital-content marketing, and in 2021 commenced postgraduate study at the Melbourne Law School (JD).
